Josiah began piano lessons shortly before his 12th birthday, having already developed an enthusiasm for the piano through listing to countless hours of instrumental music, observing his elder sister’s piano lessons and recitals, and improvising at the piano in his free time. In his first year of lessons, the family instrument (an old player piano which had the spool removed) began to break down internally, making multiple keys unable to produce any sound. The frustration of not being able to practice any of his pieces without an unwanted silence was the inspiration behind Josiah’s first original piano composition. They say that “necessity is the mother of invention”, and this proved true in this instance. Josiah completed his composition to avoid the notes that were not functional, and in the process discovered the satisfaction and joy of creating original music.
In his teen years, Josiah developed a strong interest in film-making, and a friend’s mom suggested composing music scores for film. Eventually, a door opened, and Josiah decided to jump in and enter a film scoring competition. He spent the bulk of his savings on the equipment needed, began learning the process, and submitted his score in the competition. He did not win, but the experience proved invaluable, kick-starting a series of events and networking opportunities. Josiah was hired as a film-score composer by Light Symphony Productions and Wonder Animation Studio, working on three of their award-winning short films, two of them being specifically awarded for their original music scores. Being employed as a storyteller through music themes and harmonies only strengthened Josiah's natural bent towards communicating sensitively with the piano, and added a cinematic voice to his musicianship, whether behind the keys of his piano or his DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
An earlier highlight of Josiah’s education (which significantly impacted his approach to digital orchestration) was participating in the annual winter workshop hosted by the Heart Of Texas Suzuki Organization (HOTSO) at the Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. HOSTO has significantly elevated the opportunities available to piano students (like Josiah) since 1991, having facilitated countless master-level classes, classical ensemble workshops, and recitals.
After a season of feeling torn between composing film scores and teaching piano, Josiah decided to invest his time and energy in the wonder and joy of creating a compelling music education experience for other students and families. Josiah was taught piano by Mary-Elizabeth Tomme of San Antonio, Texas and then by Vickie Pautz of Blanco, Texas, who is one of the founding members of HOSTO. Josiah was taught piano with the “mother tongue approach” developed by violinist Schinichi Suzuki (commonly known as the Suzuki Method). Josiah uses the Suzuki Method to lay the foundations for musical excellence, as it works very well with a student’s God-given ability to learn their native language. Josiah believes that applying additional methods and repertoire in a student's intermediate and advanced lessons can tailor the student's study to complement their personal goals and learning style. Josiah became a registered Suzuki piano teacher in 2019 and is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA).
Josiah attributes his love of music, and his inspiration as a musician, as coming from God and believes music was created by God for His glory and our enjoyment. It is his hope that at Hill Country Keys, every lesson taught, every event planned, and every composition shared, will beautifully reflect and communicate the grandeur and excellence of the love of God, and the immeasurable value of every individual!
